Bhadbhad, ‘Satyanashi‘ or ‘Ghamoi’ (botanical name:

Argemone mexicana)

is an American plant, but it grows everywhere in India.

By breaking any part of Satyanaashi, milk of yellow color,

resembling gold, comes out of it, hence it is also called

‘Swarnaakshiri’. The fruit of Satyanashi is square, prickly,

cup-like, in which small black seeds are filled like mustard,

which, when poured on the burning coals,

speaks turmoil. In Uttar Pradesh, it is also called Bhadbhad or Bhadbhadwa.

In Awadhi it is called Kutkutara. There are thorns on all

the parts of this plant. In the Ayurvedic text ‘Bhavprakash Nighantu’,

this plant is written by the name of Swarnakshiri or Katuparni

Its seeds are poisonous. Sometimes by mixing it with mustard,

those who use its oil also die.

Those who use mustard oil mixed with its seeds also get

epidemic dropsy, a disease of filling water in the abdominal membrane (peritoneum).
